Hybrid Event  Is Japan Back? Growth and Corporate Governance Wednesday, September 30, 2026 | 6:00 – 7:00 PM (ET)  Furman Hall Room 212 and Zoom (245 Sullivan St, New York, NY 10012) Featuring:  Paul Sheard, Economist and Author Co-sponsored by the U.S.-Asia Law Institute (USALI) of New York University School of Law   About the event Dr. Paul Sheard will join Professor Bruce Aronson for a discussion about Japan’s economic growth strategy and corporate governance, with a particular focus on the Takaichi Cabinet’s growth agenda, sometimes called “Sanaenomics,” and how it compares with “Abenomics.” They will also discuss how Japan’s broader strategic priorities are evolving in response to shifting domestic and global economic conditions. About the speakers Dr. Paul Sheard is a New York–based Australian American economist and author of the Wall Street Journal bestseller The Power of Money: How Governments and Banks Create Money and Help Us All Prosper. He has held senior roles including vice chairman and global chief economist at S&P Global and Nomura Securities, and academic appointments at Harvard Kennedy School, Osaka University, the Australian National University, and Stanford University. An expert on Japan’s economy and financial system, Sheard has advised the Japanese government, served on World Economic Forum expert councils, and currently holds advisory and board roles with Sompo Holdings, the Foreign Policy Association, and the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College. He holds a master’s degree and PhD from the Australian National University and an honorary doctor of laws from Monash University. Bruce Aronson is senior advisor at the Japan Center of the U.S.-Asia Law Institute and an adjunct professor at NYU School of Law. He has been a tenured professor of law at universities in the United States (Creighton University) and Japan (Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo). Before beginning his academic career, he was a corporate partner at the law firm of Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP in New York. He also served as an independent director at Eisai Co., Ltd., a listed Japanese pharmaceutical company. Professor Aronson twice received Fulbright grants to be a senior research scholar at the University of Tokyo and at Waseda University, and was a visiting scholar at the Bank of Japan. His main area of research is comparative corporate governance with a focus on Japan and Asia. Publications include a textbook, Corporate Governance in Asia: A Comparative Approach (with J. Kim, Cambridge University Press, 2019)
