Analysis of elections globally often focuses on politics, but deeper and even more important for business and society are trends in political economy they reveal. Glenn Hubbard and Tano Santos will explore how we got to this economic point, with changing attitudes toward globalization and trade, technology and artificial intelligence, industrial policy and subsidies, and the role of government in the economy. They argue that there is never something completely new in economics – and classical economic thinkers struggled with similar challenges with powerful ideas – and offer a roadmap for today. At a minimum these key business themes are on the ballot globally. (Commercial alert: The conversation draws on themes from their Modern Political Economy elective, offered next in a block week course this January.)
